Conroe Community Information

Conroe, Texas

Conroe is known for its eclectic and revitalized downtown district. The farming, timber, railroad and oil industries each caused a period of major growth in Conroe and each of these "boom" periods left a distinct mark downtown. Today, the city's downtown streets are lined with retail and private businesses and family-owned restaurants. Downtown Conroe is also the site of many of the town's exciting annual events, such as the Conroe Cajun Catfish Festival, featuring music, food and entertainment. The Greater Conroe/Lake Conroe Chamber of Commerce located in downtown Conroe also features several events throughout the year, including the Lobsterfest Annual Golf Tournament. The Lobsterfest is unlike any other event held in Conroe. The day starts with a golf tournament at an area golf course. The evening events are moved to The Lone Star Convention Center and include Hospitality hour, silent auction, live auction and a Lobster and Steak dinner.

Education

The city's school system?the Conroe Independent School District (CISD), established in the late 19th century?is outstanding. The district has earned several awards in the past decade for various student achievements and for its low student-teacher ratio. Additionally, students consistently score well above the national averages on assessment tests. CISD is the largest district in the county and one of the fastest growing in the nation. For post-secondary education, Montgomery College and the University Center are just a few miles away.

Parks & Recreation

Conroe's Parks and Recreation Department maintains numerous parks and recreational facilities and offers plenty of special annual events. Conroe parks range in size and scope from the 200-acre Carl Barton Jr. Park, to .8-acre Gibson Park. The parks department also oversees a recreation center, swim center, and the Oscar Johnson Community Center. Annual events include Give Thanks Week in November, KidFish, and a Christmas toy drive.

Culture

Nearby Houston is filled with a multitude of cultural centers, arenas, concert venues, shopping centers, restaurants and nightclubs for people of all ages to enjoy. Professional sports teams such as baseball's Astros, football's Texans and basketball's Rockets all play their home games within 30 minutes of downtown Conroe, making it easy for Conroe residents to support the area's teams.

Community

Conroe offers residents a unique lifestyle, combining small town Southern hospitality with big city amenities. Locals enjoy a tight-knit community atmosphere with safe streets, good schools and green parks. Conroe's proximity to Houston also affords residents the luxury of experiencing the best recreation, entertainment and employment opportunities a thriving metropolis can offer.
